Food and everyday housekeeping

1. Keep dry foods in sound, tightly closed containers.
2. Check older ingredients for insects or webbing before adding new supplies.
3. Clean food spills and crumbs, including around appliances.
4. Store pet food securely and clean feeding areas.
5. Use covered waste containers and clean up leaks or residue around them.

Finding moths in a cupboard calls for a source check. Our pantry-pest article explains where to begin.

Moisture and access

6. Repair plumbing leaks and investigate recurring damp areas.
7. Keep gutters and drainage working; arrange help for work at height.
8. Check window screens and door seals.
9. Review visible gaps around utility entries without disturbing electrical equipment or blocking ventilation.
10. Have suspected animal entry checked before closing an opening.

Storage and signs worth following up

11. Keep storage organized so corners and surfaces can be inspected.
12. Store firewood away from the building and check it before bringing it indoors.
13. Examine deliveries and secondhand furniture before placing them in living areas.
14. Inspect luggage after travel; washing alone is not a dependable bed-bug treatment. See our travel checklist.
15. Record repeated sightings with dates, locations and a clear photograph when practical.
