A few shield-shaped bugs collecting at a window in September can look like a problem with the window itself. In New Jersey, brown marmorated stink bugs often look for sheltered places as the weather cools. Finding adults indoors does not mean they are breeding in your kitchen.
Start at the opening
Check the screen, window trim and nearby gaps from a position you can reach safely. Note whether insects are outside on the wall, inside the room or appearing from a concealed space. A photograph can help separate stink bugs from other insects that gather on buildings.
Keep the response proportionate
Remove occasional indoor insects without crushing them. Repair accessible screen damage and discuss larger exterior gaps with the person responsible for the building. Repeated activity across several rooms deserves a closer look, but spraying every room does not fix an entry opening. Our stink bug guide explains the difference between an indoor nuisance and damage to plants outdoors. For a recurring problem, tell us which side of the building is affected and when it began.
