Spiders

Most spiders encountered in New Jersey buildings are more likely to be incidental visitors or predators of other insects than a serious hazard. A brown spider is not automatically a brown recluse; brown recluses are extremely uncommon in New Jersey. Identification is more useful than assuming the worst from color or size.

For repeated indoor sightings, note the room, web locations and nearby insect activity. Reduce clutter, repair screens and address gaps that allow insects inside. An occasional spider and a recurring problem across several areas do not necessarily call for the same response.

Avoid handling a spider you cannot identify. A photograph taken from a safe distance can help. If you think you have been bitten and have concerning symptoms, seek medical advice; a skin mark alone does not establish that a spider caused it. Treatment precautions remain product-specific, and no pesticide service is risk-free.
