Bed bug home remedies: what to avoid and what helps

If you think you have bed bugs, the first job is to confirm what you found. Bites alone do not identify the insect. Save a clear photograph or a safely contained specimen and check the bed frame, mattress seams and nearby furniture for signs.
Do not spray rubbing alcohol on bedding
Rubbing alcohol is flammable and is not a reliable way to eliminate an infestation. EPA reports house fires caused by using it for bed bug control. Do not use improvised heaters, gasoline or other household chemicals as treatments. Lavender and tea tree oil are not a substitute for a proper inspection and treatment plan.
Useful steps while you arrange help
Avoid moving loose belongings between rooms. Bag affected washable items before carrying them to the laundry. A clothes dryer can help with items that tolerate heat; follow the item’s care instructions and the treatment preparation guidance you receive. Vacuuming accessible hiding places can remove some bugs, but it does not establish that the infestation is gone. Seal and dispose of vacuum contents promptly.
Ask for a plan, including follow-up
Bed bug work depends on the extent of the problem and the building. In an apartment, let the property manager know so access and any wider inspection can be coordinated. Ask what preparation is needed, what treatment is proposed and how results will be checked. Follow the instructions for your actual service.
