Wildlife in a Building: Check Before Sealing Entry Gaps

Scratching in a ceiling or a damaged vent needs investigation before someone closes the opening. Sealing an active entry can trap animals inside, separate adults from young, or move the problem into another part of the building.

Observe without handling

From a safe position, note where activity occurs and the time of day. Photograph visible damage if you can do so without approaching the animal or climbing onto a roof. Keep children and pets away. Do not reach into a nest, corner an animal or handle droppings as ordinary household debris.

Check the species and timing

Removal and exclusion depend on the species, whether young are present, and applicable New Jersey rules. Bats require particular care and exclusion timing. If a bat may have had contact with a person or pet, seek prompt advice from local public health or animal-control officials rather than releasing it yourself.

Useful prevention around the property

Secure refuse, clean outdoor cooking areas and bring pet food indoors. Arrange repairs to damaged vents or openings after occupancy has been checked and the appropriate steps completed. A suspected wildlife entry should not be treated as a routine caulking job.
